The Complete FASTag Guide 2026

Everything you need to know about FASTag in India — from buying and KYC to recharge, bank comparison, and troubleshooting.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is an RFID-enabled (Radio Frequency Identification) prepaid tag affixed on your vehicle's windscreen. When you approach a FASTag-enabled toll plaza, sensors detect the tag and automatically deduct the applicable toll amount from your linked account — without stopping your vehicle.

How it works: The FASTag tag contains a microchip that stores your vehicle and account information. Toll plaza sensors communicate with the tag wirelessly and process payment in milliseconds. You receive an SMS confirmation for every deduction.

Coverage: FASTag is operational at 900+ national highway toll plazas, all state highway plazas in major states, parking at major airports, and select petrol stations and parking lots.

Why is FASTag Mandatory?

NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) made FASTag mandatory for all four-wheelers effective February 15, 2021 under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2021.

Penalty for non-compliance: Vehicles without a valid FASTag entering a FASTag-designated lane are charged double the applicable toll fee.

Benefits to India: The mandate reduces congestion at toll plazas by eliminating cash transactions, improving traffic flow, and generating real-time data for highway management.
